What the heck is an "emotional affair" anyway? Is it cheating? Doesn't cheating on your spouse or partner require that you have sex with someone else?

I recently stumbled upon an excellent resource for anyone researching the topic of infidelity. Straight From The Heart is an excellent site hosted by licensed marriage and family therapist Dr. Sheri Meyers Gantman.

She hosts her own talk show (which is nothing like "Sex with Sue"…than goodness!) where she interviews leading experts in psychology, relationships, health and personal growth.

She has also created some very helpful videos. This one in particular, on Infidelity and Emotional affairs clarifies the "grey area" surrounding the subject of emotional infidelity.

Many people justify emotional affairs and credit themselves with being faithful because they are not physically intimate with someone else. They think that because they aren't having sex with that person, no harm is being done to their marital relationship. No true!

If you honestly believe that your friendship with someone other than your spouse is purely "platonic" because no sex is involved, watch the video. Test yourself and see if your friendship avoids the three signs of an emotional affair…
